My Hearing Loss and Me: We Get Along Most of the Time
Author: John F. Anderson (an adult with hearing loss) I wrote this book to help children and adults understand the point of view of a child with hearing loss. I felt that people who were living with hearing loss were not talking about their experiences.
This is a picture book where almost all the pictures are about some aspect of communication.
The book is focused on the perspective of a nine-year-old boy who is the only one with hearing loss in his family. He uses a single cochlear implant to give him some partial hearing. He attends public school and is in the fourth grade.
My hope for this book is that it encourages conversation about hearing loss between the reader and an adult in a way that feels safe.
It is my belief that conversation about experiences is crucial to a child who is learning to communicate with people who have normal hearing.
Everyone's personal experience with hearing loss is different. The situations described in this book are intended as a way to begin having those conversations.
While the focus of this book is on children and schools, I believe there are many examples in this book that can be applied to adults with hearing loss. The key difference is that for children with hearing loss, parents are learning, hopefully, how to be role models about living with hearing loss for their children.
